“ONE senior officials meeting (SOM) during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit in 2015 will be set in Davao City in November 2015, a tourism official confirmed Wednesday.
But Davao City Tourism Operations Office officer-in-charge Lisette Marques told reporters that there is no final detail yet as to when and where it will be held in the city.
She said members of the Apec-National Organizing Committee (Apec-NOC) who conducted an ocular inspection in the city are pushing for the city to get more than one meeting, be it SOMs or ministerial meetings (MMs) during the Apec Summit 2015.
“The reason that they they are pushing for this is that we have really good venues like the convention center and we have a higher number of hotel rooms compared to the other areas. However there is no official word yet from them (Apec-NOC) if there will be an added meeting here in Davao,” Marques said.
She also said that the city has been considered as an alternative venue for the summit in case the other venues are not able to hold some of the meetings or events.
“We were aware of their previous ocular inspections but just recently when we did a round inspection at the airport, we happen to encounter the inspection team doing a surprise inspection. For us, this really meant that they are really considering Davao City as a venue,” said Marques.
Aside from Davao City, seven other venues have also been shortlisted to host some of the summit’s SOMs and MMs, they are: Metro Manila, Tagaytay, Clark, Subic, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, and Boracay.
Twenty-one Pacific Rim economies converge yearly in the summit which was first held in Canberra, Australia in November 1989. The Philippines last hosted the event in November 1996 at Manila and Subic.
Meanwhile, Davao City also bidded for the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines National Summit that will also be held in 2015. The summit will be a convergence of tourism officers from various cities, provinces, and municipalities.”
